Amentum has been selected by the US Department of Energy’ s National Nuclear Security Administration( NNSA) to enter negotiations for a phased lease to develop a major artificial intelligence data centre and energy generation project at the Savannah River Site, South Carolina.
If finalised, the public-private initiative would create a 1GW AI data centre supported by around 2GW of on-site power generation. The facility would initially use natural gas before transitioning to advanced nuclear energy as part of a long-term energy strategy.
John Heller, CEO, Amentum, said artificial intelligence, energy resilience and national security were becoming increasingly interconnected, creating new opportunities to strengthen the US strategic advantage. He said the company’ s engineering expertise, government partnerships and infrastructure experience positioned it to deliver critical facilities supporting future technologies.
Mark Whitney, President of Amentum’ s Energy & Environment business, said the project built on the company’ s longstanding role at the Savannah River Site. He said Amentum would combine its expertise in nuclear operations, infrastructure development and programme delivery to help accelerate the next generation of AI and energy infrastructure while maintaining high standards of safety and security.
The project is intended to expand domestic AI computing capacity, strengthen reliable electricity generation and demonstrate how public-private partnerships can support advanced technology deployment and critical infrastructure investment.
Amentum said the initiative reflected growing demand for secure computing capacity and resilient energy systems capable of supporting increasingly complex AI workloads while reinforcing national security objectives and long-term infrastructure resilience across the United States.
SOUTH CAROLINA
Comcast has expanded its broadband network in Highlands County, Florida, making Xfinity and Comcast Business services available to more than 4,000 homes and businesses, including over 1,800 locations that previously lacked broadband access.
The expansion gives residents and businesses access to high-speed Internet, mobile, entertainment and smart home services delivered through Comcast’ s converged network. Highlands County now joins more than 65 million homes and businesses across the US connected to the company’ s national infrastructure.
Chris Campbell, Vice Chair, Highlands County Commission, said reliable high-speed Internet had become essential for education, healthcare, business growth and everyday life. He said the investment would create new opportunities for residents, strengthen local businesses and improve the county’ s long-term competitiveness.
Construction will continue throughout the summer, extending the network to a further 1,200 locations before the project is completed by the end of 2026.
Kristeen Cominiello, Senior Vice President of Comcast’ s Florida Region, said the milestone reflected the company’ s ongoing investment in expanding connectivity across the state. She added that Comcast would continue extending services to additional communities throughout Highlands County.
The project was supported through a public-private partnership involving Florida’ s Broadband Opportunity Program and Capital Projects Fund. It forms part of Comcast’ s wider broadband expansion strategy across Florida, which also includes projects in Lake, Leon and Nassau counties.
Alongside network deployment, Comcast said it would continue supporting digital inclusion through its Internet Essentials programme, affordable devices, digital skills initiatives, WiFi-connected Lift Zones and partnerships with Florida community organisations to improve broadband adoption and long-term digital access for residents.
