Micron’ s latest expansion is designed to position the company at the forefront of this rapidly evolving market while strengthening domestic production capacity and reducing reliance on overseas manufacturing.
Micron anticipates that the increased investment will support its long-term goal of producing 40 % of its DRAM in the US while creating additional well-paid direct and indirect jobs. The expanded investment reflects the company’ s confidence in its technology leadership and continued demand for its leading-edge memory products.
The announcement also marks an important construction milestone. The first concrete pour at the Clay facility comes more than one quarter ahead of the original schedule, signalling the project’ s transition from extensive site preparation into full vertical construction.
Micron has also announced plans to invest up to US $ 3 billion to help develop the domestic semiconductor supply chain ecosystem supporting its expanding US manufacturing footprint.
The supply chain investment is expected to support suppliers across multiple stages of semiconductor production, helping create a stronger ecosystem capable of supporting long-term manufacturing growth within the United States. As governments and technology companies seek greater resilience in critical industries, investment in domestic manufacturing has become increasingly important to national economic competitiveness and technology leadership.
“ As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, data and memory are foundational to the modern economy – and Micron is increasing our U. S. investments to more than $ 250 billion through 2035 to meet that moment,” said Sanjay Mehrotra, Micron Chairman, President, and CEO.
The milestone reflects the speed at which one of the world’ s most ambitious semiconductor manufacturing projects is progressing. Once fully developed, the New York campus is expected to become the centrepiece of Micron’ s long-term US manufacturing strategy and a key contributor to future AI infrastructure, supporting growing demand for advanced memory technologies across cloud computing, enterprise systems, automotive applications and next-generation intelligent devices.
The scale of the project reflects the wider transformation taking place across the semiconductor sector as AI workloads drive unprecedented demand for advanced memory. High-capacity, high-bandwidth DRAM has become an essential component in training and deploying increasingly sophisticated AI models, making investment in domestic manufacturing capability a strategic priority for both industry and government.
The Clay development also demonstrates the growing importance of partnerships between technology companies, construction specialists, equipment suppliers and public sector organisations. Such collaboration is expected to play a significant role in ensuring the United States can expand semiconductor production while building the skilled workforce required to support long-term growth.
Less than six months after breaking ground in January 2026, Micron has completed key early site work and is transitioning to vertical construction having selected Bechtel to partner on the engineering, procurement and construction for the first New York fab. Jacobs, the architectural and engineering design partner, and Gilbane Building Company, the preconstruction and site infrastructure contractor, will also join.
Construction activity has already generated significant economic benefits across the state. To date, Micron, in partnership with Gilbane during the early site works phase, has directed approximately US $ 675 million – more than half of the total awarded contract value so far – to New York-based contractors, suppliers and subcontractors, including companies from Syracuse, Liverpool, Rome, Rochester, Watertown, Buffalo and Binghamton. More than 80 % of workers on the site to date have been New York residents, underlining the project’ s impact on regional employment and business development.
Building the facility will require thousands of skilled craft professionals during peak construction, creating opportunities for union trades, apprentices, graduates of local training programmes, specialist contractors and suppliers. With plans for up to four fabrication plants, Micron’ s New York campus represents the largest private investment in the state’ s history and is expected to generate up to 50,000 jobs, including approximately 9,000 direct Micron positions.
Beyond the construction phase, the project is expected to support a broader innovation ecosystem by attracting suppliers, research organisations, educational institutions and
